How do you write an introduction to a research paper?

So I have never written a research paper before and I have the basics of the body of the essay done but the introduction is tripping me up just a little bit. Is it suppose to be exactly like a normal essay or am I suppose to add special statistics and information? My friend suggested I add cool statistics to get the reader intrigued but I'm not sure if that's allowed in a research essay? Do you think I will get docked points?
