How should I go about setting up a comparison essay?

So, I have to write a comparison essay for my English class in the next week and I have never written an essay like this before and I'm not sure how to compare two things without making it sound super redundant. What I have written right now just sounds weird because it's like "this thing is like this, while the other thing is like this" and "these are different because of this." I don't know how to make it sound more interesting.
