Topic ideas for an essay about addiction?

It's my first year of high school and I have never really written a paper before and long story short my English teacher is awful. I'm basically learning everything on my own and it is very difficult and my grade it not doing too great at the moment anyway. We have to write a three page paper over something that has greatly affected our lives and I chose addiction. My question is, do you have any topic ideas for a thesis that would really stand out and maybe help me get a good grade on this essay?
